  • Nine matters with which to welcome Ramadan
  • The role of the Mosque Imam in Ramadan

The First Sermon

All praise is due to Allah (swt), who has blessed us with faith and ordained fasting for us in Ramadan, so that we may attain pleasure and contentment from Allah (swt), the King and Judge; it is a refinement for the souls and health for the bodies. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah alone, the Lord of the heavens and the universes. I bear witness that our Prophet Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His Messenger—the leader of the just, the role model for the workers, and the master of those who fast and stand in prayer. May Allah (swt)’s peace and blessings be upon him, his family, and his companions, and whoever follows them and treads their path with excellence until the Day of Judgment.

As for what follows: Fear Allah (swt), O servants of Allah, and realize the blessing that you are approaching. Indeed, it is the season of goodness and blessings; it is the time for the descent of mercies from the Lord of the earth and the heavens. Indeed: “The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” [Quran 2:185]. Its fasting is the third pillar of Islam and one of its great foundations. It is a month in which the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed, and the rebellious devils are chained.

O Muslims: How do we welcome this month? And how can we gain the greatest share and portion from it?

Know first that welcoming Ramadan is not by buying various types of juices and drinks, nor by providing varieties of foods! It is not by preparing kitchens for food and setting it in halls, and it is not by taking leave from work to dedicate time for sleep and wandering the streets.

Welcoming Ramadan is by resolving to perform acts of obedience and hastening to do good deeds. On the authority of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do good deeds in the time that you have and take advantage of the moments of gentle breeze from the mercy of Allah. Verily, Allah has moments of gentle breeze from his mercy that he sends upon whomever he wills among his servants. Ask Allah to cover your faults and protect you from your anxieties.” [Al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 719].

O Muslim, these are nine matters with which to welcome Ramadan:

  • First: Supplicating to Allah (swt) to let you reach the month of Ramadan. On the authority of Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet ﷺ said: “supplication is worship.” [Sunan Abi Dawud 1479]. The righteous predecessors used to pray to Allah (swt) to let them reach Ramadan, then they would pray to Him to accept it from them. When you reach Ramadan and see the crescent moon, say what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say when he saw the crescent: “O Allah, bring it over us with blessing and faith, and security and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3451].
  • Second: Thanking Allah (swt) for letting you reach Ramadan. How many men prayed next to you in the night prayer last year and are now resting in the dust? If it were said to him, “Make a wish!” he would say, “One hour of Ramadan!” So be that person.
  • Third: Joy and rejoicing. Our righteous predecessors from the Companions and the Followers (may Allah be pleased with them) used to care deeply about the month of Ramadan and rejoice at its arrival. What joy is greater than being informed of the proximity of the season of good deeds and the descent of mercies?
  • Fourth: Having a sincere resolve to seize it and fill its time with righteous deeds. Whoever is truthful with Allah (swt), Allah (swt) will be truthful with him, help him in obedience, and facilitate the paths of goodness for him. Allah Almighty said: “O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.” [Quran 9:119]. Plan for yourself how you will spend your day from after Suhoor until the Suhoor of the next day! Where will you pray Taraweeh? How many parts of the Quran will you read daily? How much will you seek forgiveness? How much will you glorify Allah (swt)? When and how will you supplicate to your Lord and turn to Him in humility? And so on… Firm up your matter, divide your day and night, and rejoice, for you will attain goodness by the permission of Allah (swt).
  • Fifth: Learning the rulings of fasting and gaining understanding of them. A believer must worship Allah (swt) based on knowledge. One is not excused for ignorance of the obligatory duties that Allah (swt) has ordained, including the fast of Ramadan. A Muslim should learn the issues and rulings of fasting before it arrives so that the fast is correct and accepted by Allah (swt). Allah Almighty said: “So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin.” [Quran 47:19]. And He (swt) said: “and say, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'” [Quran 20:114]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” [Sunan Ibn Majah 224].
  • Sixth: Sincere repentance. We must welcome it with the resolve to leave sins and misdeeds, and with sincere repentance from all sins, quitting them and resolving never to return to them. Ramadan is the month of repentance; if one does not repent in it, when will they repent? Allah Almighty said: “And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.” [Quran 24:31]. Reflect on how Allah (swt) commanded the people of faith to repent and tied success in this world and the Hereafter to it. For this reason, our Messenger ﷺ used to seek forgiveness frequently in all his states. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is (at times) some sort of shade upon my heart, and I seek forgiveness from Allah a hundred times a day.” [Sahih Muslim 2702a]. And he said: “By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and I turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 6307].
  • Seventh: Complete eagerness to perform obligatory duties, such as maintaining the prayers and arriving early for Friday and congregational prayers, fulfilling the rights of the family, and the rights of the job and work. It also includes increasing voluntary prayers, remembrance, charity, and reciting the Quran. Increase in completions of the Quran as much as you are able. It is a mistake that some people finish the Quran once at the start of the month and then never touch it again; this is a deprivation and a discouragement from Satan. Seek help from Allah (swt) and finish it time after time. It is also recommended to plan for a lesson in Tafseer with family, relatives, or friends, reading from the Tafseer of Ibn Sa’di or other reliable books, even if only ten verses a night. How many people have nightly gatherings? If a successful person among them suggested a simple lesson in Tafseer, goodness, knowledge, and rewards would be attained.

May Allah (swt) bless me and you in the Great Quran and benefit me and you with what is in it of verses and wise remembrance.

  • Eighth: Among the things we prepare with to welcome Ramadan: preparing to provide Iftar for those fasting in the mosques and homes. This is a righteous deed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever provides the food for a fasting person to break his fast, then for him is the same reward as his (the fasting person’s), without anything being diminished from the reward of the fasting person.” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 807]. Prepare the place in your home or mosque. Bringing joy to the poor is among the deeds most beloved to Allah (swt). Indeed, sitting with the poor and serving them is most beneficial for softening your heart and increasing your faith.
  • Ninth: What students of knowledge specifically should prepare for: calling to Allah (swt) in Ramadan. Hearts are thirsty and souls are receptive. Remind people of Allah and the virtues of fasting and teach them the rulings. “And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness and says, ‘Indeed, I am of the Muslims’?” [Quran 41:33]. Among the ways of Dawah is giving short reminders, especially in the prayers where people gather. Many people only attend the congregation in Ramadan; it is an opportunity to call them and return them to their Lord! Prepare your words, keep them brief and not long, and focus on what benefits the people, especially the rulings of fasting and Taraweeh. This also includes distributing booklets and messages related to Ramadan to the congregants and neighbors.

O Imam of the Mosque, you should prepare the books you will read to your congregation after Asr or Isha/Taraweeh. Coordinate with students of knowledge to give reminders to your congregation. Take their appointments from now and prepare yourself; may Allah (swt) guide your steps.

Finally: Increase in this supplication: “O Allah, help me to remember You, in giving thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Mu’adh: “I advise you, O Mu’adh, do not fail to say after every prayer: ‘O Allah, help me in remembering You, in giving You thanks, and worshipping You well.’” [Sunan Abi Dawud 1522].O Allah (swt), help us to remember You, thank You, and worship You well. O Allah (swt), let us reach Ramadan and make us among those who fast and stand in prayer out of faith and seeking reward. O Allah (swt), we seek refuge in You from laziness, old age, and debt; from the trial and punishment of the grave; and from the trial and punishment of the Fire, and from the evil of the trial of wealth and the evil of the trial of poverty, and we seek refuge in You from the evil of the Antichrist. “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” [Quran 2:201]. O Allah (swt), send peace and blessings upon Your servant and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
